Ellen To Replace Paula on Idol . . . Seriously?

Time will tell whether Fox's decision to fill the "American Idol" judge's seat vacated by Paula Abdul with Ellen DeGeneres will pay off, but personally, I'm not feeling it.

I mean, I like Ellen, I've interviewed her, and she's a genuinely funny, sweet person, with the kind of fast-on-her-feet humour that makes her such a great talk-show host. But that makes her as qualified to judge a singing contest as, well, me, you or pretty much anybody else. Paula at least made records. And although she usually had little of value to say when it came to the judging, she was at her best when she came off as being batcrap crazy, babbling about cornflakes and moths and slurring her words, and dancing inappropriately at the drop of a hat and arguing with Simon and crying and, well, I don't see Ellen topping that. Unless there's some hidden psychiatric condition we don't know about, Ellen just seems way too stable mentally to contribute the kind of entertainment to which I've become accustomed — Simon being brutally honest, Paula being wacky, Randy saying not much of anything, and, now, Kara babbling on and on and on and on so the show runs five minutes long every week. As I try to imagine how Ellen will fit into this mix, I can't say I'm particularly enthusiastic about it.

But I'll try to keep an open mind. Here's what the press release announcing Ellen's participation said: "Emmy Award-winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a fourth judge. DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi and offer her own unique perspective to the contestants throughout the competition."

“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on AMERICAN IDOL,” said DeGeneres. ”I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.”

Cool!

This is great news to hear that Ellen has been chosen to replace Paula. Brent, I have no doubt that she will be a great addition and I would even go so far as to predict she is going to be way better that Paula (and I liked Paula and kept hoping that she would be back). Ellen is quick, funny, and smart. She also has a vast knowledge of music and loads of A-list musician friends and connections. The big question is: will she have the right chemistry to fit in with the other judges? I think she will. I also think it will be good to have a judge on the panel who is not a musician. A good example is when Quentin Tarantino guest judged last season -- you could see his influence in that the performances were that much more dramatic that week.

I agree

Ellen is going to be a great addition to the judges panel. I too thought that it would be tough to replace Paula's loopiness, but in retrospect, is lunacy really something that we actually require from this show? Yeah, it'll be a different vibe. It'll definitely be smarter, funnier and less chemically dependent, that's for certain! And honestly, the fact that she's NOT a musician might actually bring a new perspective to the table for a change. Paula may have made records that sold in the gazillions, but let's be serious, she was a Laker Girl who somehow managed to get a label deal without any previous singing experience to speak of. She got lucky and she made a career of it, but that doesn't make her songs any more listenable. The fact that she was, umm, "nurturing" the contestants is a scary one at that. Good for Ellen! I can't wait for this season to start!

I demand lunacy!

Honestly, Crazy Paula is a big part of why I watch the show. While I agree that Ellen will probably do a great job as a judge, Paula's antics were always great for breaking up the monotony of hearing six Whitney Houston songs in a row.

Yeah, but...

...how many more times do you need to hear, "You've really made it your own," or "YOU... ARE... ADAM... LAMBERT!!!" or even "You can sing the phone book!" in any one given episode?

I admit that I got giggles out of Crazy Paula too, but it says something really sad about our society when we take entertainment value from blatherings spewed by a chemically unstable nutjob. I'm looking forward to hearing some truly humorous and intelligent commentary. THAT will break up the monotony of hearing six "yo dawgs" or "artistry"(s) in a row.

ELLEN IS KIND..DOESN'T

ELLEN IS KIND..DOESN'T MATTER IS SHE'S A LESBIAN OR NOT.. PEOPLE LOVE HER BECAUSE OF HER GOOD PERSONALITY
