Paula Abdul may have walked away after being offered half the salary she was seeking, but Simon Cowell is reported to be in the final stages of finalizing a $45-million-a-year "American Idol" deal that will keep him at the judges' table for three more seasons. Ka-ching!

So that's why Fox couldn't afford to pay Paula what she wanted — they needed to save all their money to pay Simon.

Meanwhile, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi are locked in (at substantially lower figures, natch), while guest judges will hit the road for the auditions until a permanent replacement can be found when the show's ninth season premieres in January.

So far, the only guest judges to be confirmed have been Katy Perry and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham. And, if a recent item in gossipy RadarOnline is to be believed, Beckham's stint did not go particularly well. According to an "insider," Beckham "tried too hard to be 'nice,' but came off as icy and wooden."

Posh Spice? Icy and wooden? Who could have seen that coming.

45 million a year?

Sounds like he is the highest paid person in pretty much the whole darn world? Who makes that much, besides Oprah?

I'm surprised Posh can talk

I'm surprised Posh can talk through that pout. How's a lip-synch artist qualified to judge singing, anyway??
