This week Bella made dinner. Fortunately for me, she didn’t retaliate with an allergen-ridden dish, like baked chicken served with a penicillin sauce. That said, there were a few close calls with lighting the barbeque. Luckily, eyebrows intact, we were able to raise both eyebrows during the show (eat your botoxed heart out, Mary).

Here are some high and low lights from the Top 18 Performance show:

Phillip and Jeannie performed an abysmal Tango. Jeannie was all right, but Phillip’s weaknesses and lack of professional training were very apparent. Mary gave them an A+ in attitude, which is never a good sign, but surprisingly they weren’t in the bottom 3. We think they were carried through on Phillip’s personality. Which is really a misnomer. Has anyone actually seen his personality? Cuz I’m not sure he has one. Seriously, take a closer look when he’s next on camera. He never speaks. It’s like they turn the mike off each time he talks. He looks like a mime or a silent movie star from 1922. Weird.

Asuka and Vitolio performed a waltz that was choreographed to portray the hardship and pain that Vitolio has gone through in his life. Bella thinks they are good actors, but unfortunately, this is a dance show not an acting show. Ouch. No, actually, it was a really great, emotionally moving piece. Superb lines and movement flow from both dancers. Well done.

During Max and Kayla’s rehearsal segment of the show, Bella commented out of the blue, “He’s next to go.” How’s that for foreshadowing? Max and Kayla did a Jazz routine by Brian Friedman. It was okay, but as it turns out, it put them in the bottom three and at the end of the day, Max was sent home. After the show, Bella rushed out to purchase a business license. Bella’s Psychic Alliance will be up and running as soon as she cleans up her parents’ garage, and gets clearance on that 1-900 number. Stay tuned.

Kupono and Ashley came to the table with a lame Shane Sparks Hip Hop routine. Shane has definitely lost his spark. They were placed in the bottom 3. This, plus a solo from Ashley that left a lot to be desired resulted in Ashley being sent home. I think she was a really amazing dancer that brought a little something different to the stage. Unfortunately, spending 20 seconds of your 30 second solo draped over the stairs doesn’t cut it for the judges. I would have rather seen Kaitlyn go home but based on the solos, I think the judges made the right decision. Kupono, on the other hand, should have gone home instead of Max. What was that about? Max’s solo was so much better than Kupono’s flit around the stage.

Aside from Asuka and Vitolio’s waltz, nothing really stood out this week for us. Our favourite couples are still Ade and Melissa and Evan and Randi. Ade and Melissa kind of missed the mark on their contemporary routine. It lacked the energy needed to really pull off Sonya’s quirky and intense choreography. As for Evan and Randi’s Jive, they pulled of the performance side of things, but it wasn’t technically sound.

What did you think? Should Max have been sent home? What about Ashley?
