Last Wednesday, Bella and I sat down to a nice dinner before watching So You Think You Can Dance. Mid-way through our meal, there was brief startling moment when I thought that I would be the only one watching the show. Bella had a close call with the coconut rice I had made. I forgot she was allergic to nuts. Luckily, she’d only had a bite before she realized it and so remained alive enough to watch the show – Yah! Needless to say I quickly hid the walnut brownies I had made for dessert. I’m not trying to poison her….I swear!

Disaster averted, we were able to focus on the performance show. And wow, there’s definitely some talent here.

Our favourite was Randi and Evan’s Jazz routine. An emotional filled touching piece with beautiful subtle moments. Randi and Evan danced with maturity and grace beyond their years. The calibre and quality of their movement was something you’d expect at the end of the season when a couple is more comfortable with their partner and with dancing in front of the camera, not for a first performance. We watched this one again on PVR; you can too, via YouTube, click here. Beware: the magic of the performance might wear off a bit when you see how short Evan and Randi are, especially when compared to Cat. But hey, we’re vertically challenged, ourselves so we won’t love our little hobbit dancers any less.

so you think you can dance season 5

Our next favourite was Melissa and Ade and their contemporary piece. We didn’t know much about these two dancers coming in from the audition show but wow, quelle surprise! Ade dances like a gentle giant, with a strong yet subtle confidence. Melissa, a young 29, brings so much experience to her dancing without the ego of youth. It was a great performance that had a flowing quality that hypnotized the audience….and did you SEE that lift?! Check it out here

Also noteworthy was the Fox Trot with Brandon and Janette. Brandon was able to bring a performance quality that’s been missing from his dancing previously. It was enjoyable to watch, but when Bella made a comment that Brandon looks like Carlton from Fresh Prince I couldn’t help but lose focus. Can you see the similarity?

Mary Murphy’s hilarious comment didn’t help with the focus either. Cat asked Mary to use her eyebrows to express herself and Mary retorted that she can’t use her eyebrows anymore because of Botox! Told you so! It had the entire audience on the ground laughing. The pink elephant in the room was finally acknowledged!

so youthink you can dance kupono

Worst performance of the night was Kupono and Ashley’s Wade Robson Jazz routine. You definitely had to be on something to fully appreciate what the judges call Wade’s ‘genius’ – fairly certain that we don’t agree with the word choice there. This interpretive piece would be better fit for a Twilight Zone episode rather than So You Think You Can Dance. Bella summed it up nicely, “It looks like a performance piece that, you, (i.e., me, Jojo) would buy tickets for.” It’s funny cuz it’s true. Touche. Check it out here, or not.

Suprisingly, this performance didn’t seal Kupono and Ashley’s fate. It was Paris and Tony that actually went home. After a lackluster Hip Hop routine and a disappointing dance for their lives, they were both sent home on Thursday. And then there were 18.
