When they chose to make their debut as their hometown Vancouver Canucks hosted the Nashville Predators on December 22, few could have predicted that the pair identified simply as the Green Men would quickly become something of an overnight internet phenomenon.

The duo – Force and Sully – showed up just over a week ago bedecked in green spandex body suits, taking seats adjacent to the visitor’s penalty box, in an effort to run a little distraction for the opposition. They were likely also unaware that their very presence would not only help the locals to victory that night, but simultaneously elicit roars of approval from the in-house patrons while being introduced to the vast television audience across the country.

Within mere hours of their impromptu appearance, the exploits of the Green Men would quickly ascend to the various sports blog sites and chat rooms. Just two days later, the pair had amassed some 40,000 views in a 24 hour period alone; making them among the most-watched videos on You Tube.

It seems the legend continues to grow.

“It’s just getting bigger and bigger by the day,” Sully tells me of the pair’s ever-growing internet views and subsequent buzz.
“We’ve had something like a quarter-million hits since this whole thing started.”

With a dizzying amount of You Tube exposure along with national and international media coverage both visually and in print, it’s anyone’s guess just how the duo plan to top their efforts for exposure going forward.

And while the two haven’t heard anything officially from Canucks management up to this point, Sully suggests that perhaps the team’s mascot Finn is feeling the effects of his newfound competition for fan approval within the confines of GM Place.

“I think he’s getting a little threatened – he shot water at us.”

Meantime, a rival pair of Green Men wannabes has failed to ignite similar interest among fans, while Force and Sully have since expanded their interactive universe to now be corresponding among their followers on Twitter.

Look for more appearances in the near future and the pair says that if a phantom sponsor were to suddenly appear, perhaps the Canucks newfound good luck charm could take their act to some of the visitors rinks. After all, the Canucks are 2 – 0 with the green tandem in the building.
