Comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes Sunday night (Jan. 17) for the first, and in his opinion, last time.
"I'm pretty calm because I've got low standards ... I mean, they're not gonna invite me back," Gervais had told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour a few days before emceeing the Globes.
It certainly did seem as if Gervais didn't really care who he targeted for his rather biting humor. Nobody was off limits. In his opening monologue, the funnyman poked fun at Steve Carell (star of the American version of Gervais' British sitcom "The Office"), Angelina Jolie, Hollywood's penchant for plastic surgery, NBC and actors in general.
Throughout the evening Gervais could be seen drinking from a glass containing amber liquid, supposedly beer, while standing at the podium. "I've had a couple. I'm not going to lie to you," he said.
His biggest, most shocking zinger came after one of these sips, when Gervais declared, "Honestly, I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson.'"

BEST DRESSED GOLDEN GLOBES
I think Sophia Loren looked stunning and sophisticated. Too many dresses were way too plunging in the front, showing far too much plastic, boney, or drooping decoletage that left nothing to the imagination- not flattering! Almost no mention of the men of the evening, too bad! Ricky Gervais...bitingly hilarious! Kudos!
James Cameron
Did anyone get the impression that James Cameron, known for his arrogance and belting out "I'm the king of the world" when he won his "Titanic" Oscar, was deliberately going for humility in his acceptance speech? He doesn't appear to be too well liked among his peers because I noticed during the cutaways that the celebs were rather tight-lipped and clapping weakly after he won.
