Prom Night in Mississippi

7 p.m., HBO Canada

In 2008, Charleston High School in Mississippi held its first integrated prom — better late than never, we suppose. Still, it’s unbelievable to think that 54 years after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered an end to segregation in public schools that this high school was still holding separate graduation dances for its black and white students. This eye-opening documentary follows African-American actor Morgan Freeman as he leads the way with some brave and open-minded teens to hold the first-ever integrated prom at the Mississippi high school. Understandably, change does not come easily to this small town, and the camera of Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman captures it all, incorporating student-made videos and one-on-one interviews.

Leonard Cohen Live at the Isle of Wight 1970

8 p.m., WTVS

Not only did the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival mark the final concert appearance of Jimi Hendrix before his untimely death, it was also the scene of one of the most powerful, significant performances by Montreal singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen. As legend has it, the crowd of 600,000 was in a frenzy, pushed to the brink by Hendrix’s incendiary performance, trampling fences and setting fire to any structures and equipment they could. Following Hendrix, Cohen faced an angry mob, and proceeded to calm and quiet the crowd with this thoughtful, melodic music and wry humour. It’s a must-see for Cohen fans, featuring unforgettable performances of “Bird on a Wire,” “So Long Marianne,” “Famous Blue Raincoat” and many more.

Saturday Night Live

11:34 p.m., Global & NBC

We loved Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes (Alfie, though... not so much). Anyhow, we’re curious enough to tune in to see how he fares as host of this week’s SNL, which also features Pearl Jam.
